Who we are

Cole Jarman operates a relatively flat organisational structure with everyone, from Consultants to Directors, taking on day-to-day administrative responsibilities and management of projects in accordance with their individual experience and ability.

All technical members of staff are qualified to at least bachelor’s degree level, and have a membership of the Institute of Acoustics (IOA), the relevant professional body for individuals in our profession.

Philip Hankin

Managing Director

Philip has been with Cole Jarman since 1998 and in July 2013 took over as Managing Director. His first experience in acoustics was gained in Environmental Health where he was a Scientific Officer, investigating nuisance complaints and providing technical advice in respect of planning and licensing issues.

Philip undertakes work on a wide variety of projects but has particular expertise in the assessment of sites affected by ground borne vibration and noise from railways. He also specialises in industrial noise control, technical troubleshooting on site, sound insulation schemes in residential and commercial properties, and the acoustic design of public buildings.

Vernon Cole

Vernon Cole

Director

Vernon is the founding Director of Cole Jarman and has worked in the field of acoustics since 1980. After four years working in California he moved to Bruel & Kjaer in Denmark where he was head of the acoustics literature section. He has worked in acoustic consultancy in the UK since 1985 and established Vernon Cole Associates in 1993.

Vernon is an all rounder, working on both environmental and building projects. His particular fields of interest and expertise include presentation/performing arts facilities, leisure developments and cinemas, as well as environmental impacts arising from major transport projects and expert witness work. He has represented a number of our Clients at Public Inquiries and Parliamentary Select Committee Hearings.

Neil Jarman

Director

Neil has worked in acoustic consultancy since 1983. In 1994 he joined Vernon Cole to establish Cole Jarman. Neil has built a strong reputation in planning and has extensive experience presenting evidence at appeal public inquiries and hearings. He also undertakes other expert witness appointments including attending court and licence hearings and has extensive experience on architectural and building services acoustics.

Trained as a building engineer, Neil has a firm understanding of the requirements of other design team members in developing solutions to acoustic design issues.

Tom Zarebski

Tom Zarebski

Director

Tom joined the company in 1997 and became a Director in 2005. He has over 20 years of experience in all aspects of acoustic consultancy.

On leaving University Tom gained invaluable experience as an Acoustics Officer at Birmingham City Council before being responsible for acoustic consultancy at the Graham Consulting Group, a large multi-disciplinary engineering practice which has since been acquired by the WSP Group.

He is responsible for Marketing and Business Development, Staff Welfare and Recruitment at Cole Jarman. He has developed particular expertise in project management, environmental impact and planning assessment, detailed acoustic design for buildings, expert witness work and vibration analysis.

Tim Street

Director

Tim is a Director of Cole Jarman, having joined the company in January 2001. Tim is a highly capable and adaptive consultant, and has extensive experience in many areas of environmental noise control and acoustic design of the built environment. His particular fields of interest and expertise include media/presentation/performing arts facilities, cinema, expansive retail schemes, places of worship, and any situation that presents a technical challenge.

Tim is also responsible for the Cole Jarman marketing strategy, finances, ICT infrastructure, and has played significant roles in the development of company standards and staff training.

Adam Sharpe

 

Adam Sharpe

Having completed a degree in Audio Technology, Adam joined Cole Jarman in August 2015 and went on to study the Institute of Acoustics Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control while quickly gaining experience in a broad variety of areas. Adam’s principle interests lie in the modelling of built environments and cinema acoustics.

Andy Emery

Andy is an Associate at Cole Jarman, having joined the company in 2007 after completing his degree in Acoustical Engineering at the University of Southampton.

He has been involved in a variety of projects spanning different areas of acoustic consultancy. He has undertaken assessment work in support of numerous planning applications for new noise sensitive and noise generating developments. He has been the main contributor to the noise chapter of a number of Environmental Statements submitted with planning applications for large scale development. He has extensive experience in building acoustics and mechanical services noise assessment work and is particularly capable at computer aided modelling of environmental noise propagation.

Ann Richardson

Ann Richardson

Office Manager

Ann is the Office Manager at Cole Jarman and has worked for the Company since 2000. After an early career working in the Airline Industry she took a break to bring up her children and during this time lived in both New York and Malaysia. On her return to the UK she worked with visually impaired children and is a trained braillist. Ann is the main administrator at Cole Jarman dealing with the day to day running of the office as well as overseeing the accounts, budgets and credit control.

Ben Harper

 

Ben Harper

Ben joined Cole Jarman in 2014 upon completing his degree in Music Technology and has since completed the Institute of Acoustics Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control. Ben’s interest in acoustics was driven by a module in Acoustics and Psychoacoustics undertaken during his degree. During his time at Cole Jarman, he has gained experience in many facets of acoustics in particular with mechanical services assessments, modelling of built environments and Sound Insulation testing.

Ben Holcombe

 

Ben Holcombe

Ben first joined Cole Jarman as a summer placement in 2015 before the final year of his degree at the ISVR, University of Southampton. He then joined as a permanent member of staff in 2016 having graduated with a BEng in Acoustical Engineering.

After completing his dissertation on the future of UK airport noise, Ben particularly enjoys projects involving aircraft noise. He also is interested in large-scale projects and furthering his experience in planning assessments.

Dawn Wells

Dawn Wells

Admin Assistant

Dawn is the Admin Assistant at Cole Jarman, joining the company in mid 2018. She previously worked at a well known airline, before taking a career break to be a full time mum. Her past experience also includes work for a Pharmacy Group in their busy Head Office and also with a number of construction companies, undertaking accounts administration roles.

Ian Yates

 

Ian Yates

Ian is an Associate at Cole Jarman. He has gained a wide range of experience in many aspects of professional consulting, acoustics, engineering, problem solving and management. Ian’s Engineering degree acquired in 1999 has given him a solid basis for professional development. This accumulated experience and technical grounding enables him to approach projects in a holistic and balanced manner, while having suitable attention to detail as appropriate.

Ian has particular expertise in acoustic modelling of environmental noise propagation and environmental impact assessments, as well as extensive and valuable experience in acoustics project management and acoustic design for sound insulation purposes and room acoustics.

James Whiddett-Turle

James joined Cole Jarman in 2017 after graduating with a degree in Audio Engineering and went on to study the Institute of Acoustics Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control. He has gained a wealth of experience in a wide range of areas, notably environmental acoustics relating to plant noise assessments and residential schemes, architectural acoustics such as sound insulation testing and commissioning and acoustic design of residential and educational buildings. James has a keen interest in the acoustic design of performance spaces and sound systems.

Jo Lacy

 

Jo Lacy

Jo joined Cole Jarman in Manchester at the start of 2018, having completed his Masters in Acoustics and Bachelor of Engineering in Acoustic Engineering at the University of Salford. During his studies, he has worked at festivals and shows across the country as a noise control engineer.

Growing up both performing and recording music, and having a fascination with physics, Acoustics naturally became an ideal field of study combining all three interests. Jo has particular experience with noise from live music and blast noise propagation prediction.

Johnny Berrill

 

Johnny Berrill

Johnny studied Civil Engineering at the National University of Ireland, Galway and worked there for a year as a site engineer. He is a keen musician and spent some time touring throughout Europe and the USA before returning to the academic world to attain his Masters Degree in Environmental Acoustics at Salford University.

Since joining Cole Jarman in 2011 Johnny has gained experience in a variety of projects including environmental and planning assessments and the acoustic design of residential and educational buildings. Johnny has a particular interest in the acoustic design of performance spaces and internal and external acoustic modelling.

Josh Palmer

 

Josh Palmer

Josh began his career in acoustics with Cole Jarman in 2013. His interest in acoustics began while studying for a Masters in Electronic Engineering and Music Technology Systems, which then led to completing the Institute of Acoustics Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control.

At Cole Jarman, he has advised on a range of new-build and conversion schemes in the residential, healthcare, education and commercial sectors, from the planning stages through to completion. He is experienced in investigating and developing solutions for industrial noise problems in mixed use areas and has honed his skills using software to model the acoustic environments of spaces including restaurants, cinemas and shopping centres.

Lee Montague

 

Lee Montague

Lee is an Associate at Cole Jarman having joined the company from University in 2006. Lee has experience in all areas of acoustics, with particular expertise in environmental assessments, aviation noise, building acoustics and school design.

Lee has undertaken expert witness work, presenting at planning committee hearings and public inquiries. His particular field of interest is aircraft noise, which was the subject of his final year dissertation at University.  He has worked on a number of airport development schemes from small aerodromes to major UK airports.

Lee helps coordinate Cole Jarman’s graduate recruitment programme and regularly attends University open days, delivering presentations to students.

Matthew Heyes

 

Matthew Heyes

Matthew is an Associate at Cole Jarman and is currently running the Manchester Office. He is an acoustics graduate from the University of Salford, and has gained a wide range of experience in both environmental and building acoustics. He has developed particular expertise in school design, noise related planning issues, industrial noise control, noise from logistics operations, low frequency noise and residential design.

Matthew set up Cole Jarman’s Manchester Office and is using his knowledge of marketing and business development to increase the company’s presence in the North of the UK.

Richard Masey

 

Richard Masey

Richard joined Cole Jarman in early 2013 after completing the Institute of Acoustics Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control and a degree in Sound Design and Music Technology. During his time at Cole Jarman, he has gained experience in a broad range of subject areas and has been involved in a variety of projects including residential developments, schools, cinemas, planning assessments, and a number of, more bespoke, acoustic troubleshooting jobs.

Richard is competent with acoustic modelling software packages for both indoor and outdoor spaces and with a background in sound and music recording and production he has a keen interest in acoustics for performance spaces, studios and sound stages.

Tim Fox

 

Tim Fox

Tim is a Senior Consultant at Cole Jarman. He joined in the company in 2013, having recently completed his Masters in Acoustics at the University of Southampton. Prior to this Tim gained work experience with Cole Jarman and has already shown himself to be a valuable member of the team. His interest in acoustics began with his degree which combined physics and music together which lead Tim to be particularly interested in the acoustics of buildings as well as the human response to sound and vibration.

Tony James

 

Tony James

Tony first joined Cole Jarman in January 2016 after completing a degree in Audio and Recording Technology at De Montfort University and starting the Institute of Acoustics Diploma. His interest in acoustics developed whilst working as an engineer in commercial recording and mastering studios, as well as performing music across the UK and Europe.

Following a period volunteering with the Sea Shepherd conservation organisation, Tony re-joined Cole Jarman as a joint staff member with RSK Acoustics and is based in the Bristol Office.
